Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~

Most people would be in a serious bit of trouble if an alien spaceship fell on them. For Osaragi Hazumu though, that was only the beginning of his troubles.

Hazumu was a shy, timid and rather effeminate boy who loved gardening. After trying to confess his love to Kamiizumi Yasuna and being rejected, a dejected Hazumu goes to climb a nearby mountain in order to clear his mind. Unfortunately, said spaceship landed on his face.

The aliens, being rather kind creatures, decided to give Hazumu a new body, with one slight difference. He … has now become a she, and Hazumu now needs to reintegrate him, or rather herself, back into school and her friends, only to find that all the rules have changed.

Kashimashi is one of the prettier anime in my collection, which is to say that the animation, artwork and character designs are topnotch. The story in itself is pretty interesting, in that Hazumu needs to develop a whole new perspective on things, while his classmates have to adapt to what is a pretty major change. Not to mention the romance. Yasuna in particular had a secret that was the cause of her turning Hazumu down, but with Hazumu now being a girl, that secret doesn’t seem to be so much of a problem anymore. Throw Kurusu Tomari, Hazumu’s childhood friend into the mix and things quickly become complicated.

The music for this anime isn’t bad, but it isn’t particularly memorable either, with the possible exception of the opening track, Koi suru kokoro by eufonius which could possibly stick with you for a few days.

Kashimashi is a light-hearted romantic comedy, with a few more serious moments, which also has a few elements of sci-fi added to it. It is also classified as yuri, although, apart from a few scenes of nudity, there isn’t anything extreme or explicit in the show. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re in the mood for easy watching.

The show aired in the first quarter of 2006 in Japan and consists of 12 episodes. It was based on the original 5 volume manga, and has also generated a number of spin-offs in the form of a light novel, a game and a number of drama CD’s.

The final DVD volume also had an additional OVA episode on it, which takes place about 4 months after the conclusion of the series.
